Whether you’re strolling along golden beaches, hiking through lush forests, or relaxing in the countryside, holidays are a time to reconnect—with nature, with loved ones, and with yourself. But as you make lasting memories, there’s one simple principle we ask you to keep in mind: Leave No Trace.

What Does “Leave No Trace” Mean?

At its heart, Leave No Trace means enjoying the outdoors without changing it. It’s about respecting the natural beauty around you so that others—including future generations—can enjoy it too.

Think of it as borrowing nature for a little while, and returning it exactly as you found it.

Why It Matters

Every plastic bottle left behind, every shortcut off the trail, every bit of litter tossed into the sea—adds up. What seems small to one person becomes a serious problem when multiplied by millions of visitors.

By taking a few simple actions, you can help protect wildlife, preserve ecosystems, and keep our most cherished places beautiful and thriving.

7 Simple Ways to Leave No Trace

1. Take Only Photos, Leave Only Footprints

Don’t pick wildflowers, stack stones, or carve initials into trees. Nature is beautiful just as it is.

2. Pack It In, Pack It Out

Always bring a bag for your rubbish—even biodegradable waste like banana peels or apple cores takes time to break down and can harm animals.

3. Stick to Trails and Paths

Walking off-trail may seem harmless, but it damages delicate plant life and can cause erosion.

4. Respect Wildlife

Admire animals from a distance. Don’t feed them—it changes their natural behaviour and can make them dependent on humans.

5. Leave Campsites and Picnic Areas Better Than You Found Them

Wipe down tables, put out fires completely, and take all your belongings—and litter—with you.

6. Use Eco-Friendly Products

Choose reef-safe sunscreens, biodegradable soaps, and reusable containers. Every little bit helps.

7. Support Local and Sustainable Businesses

Eat local food, buy eco-conscious souvenirs, and choose tour operators that prioritize sustainability.

A Simple Promise

Making a difference doesn’t require grand gestures. It’s the small, thoughtful acts—done consistently—that leave the greatest impact.

So, as you enjoy your getaway, please take a moment to appreciate the land, sea, and skies that make it so special. Treat them with the same care and gratitude you’d show a friend’s home.

Because nature is our home too—and it deserves our respect.

Let’s travel kindly. Let’s leave no trace.

Learn how we are prioritising sustainability for group visit in Somerset at Lydeard Farm Bush Camp & Lodges

What wildlife can I spot?

Rabbits, hares and squirrels can be seen scurrying around. We often discover muntjac, roe and red deer when it is quiet. Amongst the birds you can see are buzzards, kestrels, woodpeckers, blackbirds and finches. 1500 native trees have been planted across the farm.

Do you recycle waste from the guests that stay?

Yes. We have recycling bins within the bush camp shelter for guests to use for plastic, cardboard, food waste, glass and soft packaging. We do not provide any single use plastic and encourage our guests to not bring such onto site.

What water saving measures are in place?

On average 9 gallons are used daily per person for flushing the toilet.

Our 6 compost loos near the Bush Camp Water don’t need water, electricity or chemicals. 5 water butts collect rain water from each lodge which we use to clean kit & muddy boots.

What do you do to save electric?

We have 32 solar panels on the farm that are used to generate electricity. Any additional energy goes to the national grid.

Torches and head torches are a must here. There is very little outside lighting and we use dim lighting in the Bush Camp Shelter to ensure we don’t spoil the dark sky experience so you have a clear view of the stars.

What Leave No Trace means to us?

We are a small business in the beautiful countryside that we want to continue to look after and for our guests to respect this.
